Thompson Shuswap Food Connections

The recently adopted Sustainable Kamloops Plan identified the need for the City of Kamloops to gain a better understanding on where viable agricultural land exists, how it should be used or enhanced, and what opportunities are available for increased food production and processing. To answer these questions a decision was made to develop an Agriculture Area Plan for the City of Kamloops. The mission of the Thompson-Shuswap Chef Farmer Collaborative (TSCFC) seeks to celebrate local food in our region using sustainable programs that inspire and educate it's membership and the community about the benefits of eating local. The collaborative will also help foster responsible regional agriculture, sustainability, and food security.  Please refer to their website for more information on how local farmers, food processors, food distributors and chefs can engage with one another through the collaborative.

The Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) was established in 1995 and has become a model for food policy councils for other Canadian cities.  The KFPC acts as an umbrella, providing an opportunity for project and advocacy groups in the community to form partnerships and co-ordinate their work.  Projects to date include Gardengate,  Community Gardens, Community Kitchens, Farmer’s Markets, Good Food Box, Farm to School Program and  Heartland Quality Foods

The KFPC also acts as forum where the experiences and insights derived from these grassroots projects can be framed as policies for adoption by agencies, institutions and governments. One such document is the Kamloops Food Action Plan.
